What would you do if you could fly to Spain tomorrow? That was the theme running through the night as Cathay Pacific celebrated its new four times weekly flights to Madrid.
Cathay Pacific wanted to make a song and dance about making Madrid its 10th direct European destination, so the airline transported media and VIP guests to Spain for one night via a mini fiesta in Paddington Sydney, complete with Spanish food, wine, song and dance… and a film too.
A Spanish feast was laid out with giant-sized pans full of freshly made paella, as well as a Spanish grazing table where guests could help themselves to chorizo de Pamplona, served with homemade pickles, Spanish manchego and cabra cheeses as well as freshly carved 18th months old jamon serrano, and last but not least, freshly cooked churros with melted chocolate dipping sauce. The sangria flowed as a Spanish band Flamenco del Mar performed live, complete with a live Flamenco dance performance.
Guests got into the spirt of the night, having fun with the Gif creator – as you can see here
Richard Jones from Cathay Pacific encouraged guests to live out Cathay’s brand ethos of living a Life Well Travelled – and to add Spain to their travel list. Special guest the Consul-General of Spain Mr Álvaro Iranzo spoke eloquently of Spain and Madrid, so much so he brought tears to the eyes of Flamenco del Mar’s singer Ruth, who was originally from Madrid. The night finished with a special viewing from the Spanish Film Festival of the movie, A Spanish Affair 2.
Cathay Pacific asked guests to come up with their best answers to #WheninSpain. We knew our guests were a creative bunch but even so, the quality of entries was outstanding. They made us laugh, gasp, sigh, dream…. It was a tough choice but we have a winner.
The winner of the two return Premium Economy Class flights to Madrid is Jean of Holy Smithereens with a great rhyme and a GIF with Spanish flair.
#WhenInSpain, my days will have an extra flair,
No time for siesta in this Spanish affair.
Bring out the Vino, Paella and squid,
For Cathay now flies to sunny Madrid!
As the evening ends, I say “Hasta Mañana”,
We’ll continue the fiesta in Viva España!
There were so many amazing entries it was hard to choose, so here are some very highly commendable mentions:
